PlantTuff Silicon Fertilizer is derived from slag produced in the steel manufacturing process and formulated for easy, low dust, soil applications. PlantTuff has been evaluated in most crops grown in Michigan and the upper Midwest. PlantTuff is primarily composed of calcium silicate, a high-quality plant nutrient product that provides Si, Ca, Fe, Mn, and Mg in plant available forms.
In-season stress to your crop is one of the largest sources of yield losses. Silicon has a significant positive effect on modulating those stresses. Silicon is one of several novel products known as “biostimulants," that enhance the plants natural defense system under stressful conditions. Stresses include both biotic stress (insects and disease) and abiotic stress (drought, temperature, wind). When PlantTuff is applied to the soil, the silicon is taken up by the plant in the form of mono-silicic acid and moves within the plant to the source of the stress. Silicon works at the cellular level changing the cell structure within the plant as well as stimulating the plant to produce natural chemical compounds that modulate stress. Additional benefits from PlantTuff include increased cell wall strength, disease tolerance, decreased insect activity, improved stalk strength resulting in less lodging, increased shoot and root density, reduced plant transpiration, improved tolerance to heat stress and increased microbial activity. Potato field trials in Michigan evaluating PlantTuff showed increases in tuber number and tuber weight.
Planttuff is not only a source of nutrients for crops, but it also works as a high-quality pH adjustment tool, revolutionizing the liming of soil. The calcium silicate adjusts the soil pH faster than high-Cal ag lime, so nutrients locked up in the soil matrix due to low pH are available to the plant in season one. Planttuff has a CCE above 100 and an RNV greater than 68%. Application rates of Planttuff range from 1000 lbs. to 1 T/A.
